Biong is a Dinka village near the White Nile River, about an hour and 15 minute flight west from Boma. Gai Luom was born in Biong, but in 1983 his village was attacked by the Northern army and at 9 years of age he was forced to flee for his life. Separated from his family, Gai became one of the thousands of the "Lost Boys" of Sudan, surviving to eventually be resettled in Nashville, TN. You can learn more of Gai's story at www.learnsudan.org. While in Nashville, Gai received word that several members of his family had survived the war and were now living back in Biong. After a visit to reconnect with his family and friends, he made a commitment to do something to help this village. As with any community in South Sudan, the one thing desired above all else was a school to provide their children an opportunity for education. About this time is when Gai met Christina Martin in Nashville and they became friends as he shared his heart for the people of Biong.

In 2010 Gai and Christina connected with SEA Partners to provide management and oversight of the Biong School Project. With funds raised by Christina and her organization, Philanthropy Fashion, ground was broken at the site for the new school in March of 2011. Our initial leadership team in Biong is comprised of a Kenyan mason/trainer and Gai's brother, Peter, who is a part of this community. A staff compound is under construction by a group of men from Biong who will be trained to become concrete block makers and masons as the school classrooms are being built. SEA Partners will engage the community of Biong in the same activities and efforts as are currently underway in Boma. This page will be updated as progress in Biong moves forward.

Improvised toys
When you can't buy toys, you improvise. These boys created some sharp looking metal vehicles.
